White Ribbon Day 25 November 2006

“Domestic violence is no respecter of age, ethnic origins, education level or socio-economic status – and wherever and whenever it occurs, domestic violence is a crime,” NFAW spokesperson Kate Gunn said today, supporting White Ribbon Day 2006.

“While White Ribbon Day is dedicated to the elimination of violence against women, ALL family violence, whatever form it takes, impacts upon women,” said Ms Gunn “and NFAW urges all Governments, State and Federal, and major community and sporting organisations to support the aims of White Ribbon Day”.

NFAW commends the Federal Government’s media campaign alerting the community to the criminal nature of domestic and sexual violence against women, and applauds the efforts of those sporting organisations which have undertaken programs to foster positive attitudinal change among young men toward women.

NFAW also supports the National Rural Women’s Coalition (NRWC)’s initiation of a project to help prevent family violence in rural communities.

“Increasingly frequent reports of violence against the elderly are a further cause of concern to NFAW”, said Ms Gunn.

“White Ribbon Day provides an opportunity for women and men of goodwill, inside and outside of government, to face up to the issue of domestic violence and find practical ways to help those who fall victim to it. Just as the anti-drink driving campaigns have brought change in public attitudes to those who are caught risking the lives of others by driving when under the influence of alcohol, so consistent and concerted action against those responsible for acts of domestic violence may eventually bring a reduction in the incidence of violence against women and children.”

The NFAW is dedicated to promoting the advancement of women in all spheres. Its current and recent projects include the Australian Women’s Archives Project Women’s History Month and Women on Boards . It is actively engaged in analysis of social policy.
