Essentially 'yes' to PML

The weekly Essential Research survey included questions on paid maternity leave this week, and the data suggests that the majority of respondents - 41% - think that the Productivity Commission has got about the right mix, while another 16% think it doesn't go far enough. However, one third of respondents believe the proposed scheme goes too far. Interestingly, the survey responses are strongly related to age. 51% of older respondents (50 years plus) think that the proposals go too far, while 51% of younger respondents (under 35 years), think it is about right. The other age related difference is that 62% of respondents in the 18-24 year age bracket agree that employers should top up maternity payments. They were in the minority, though, with 50% of respondents disagreeing with this suggestion. The views of men and women do not substantially differ in their responses to the survey question. Draw your own conclusions. It is pretty unlikely that the 50 years plus age group will need PML for themselves, and it would seem they don't think their children do either. Pity.
